This month, we are celebrating a journey spanning nearly 25 years—a journey rooted in deep relationships, transformative education, and community empowerment in Tanzania. This is the story of Soma and Tedy, Strong Harvest, a committed sponsor, and Naretisho Primary School in Babati, Tanzania.

A Legacy Forged in Tanzania

From 2000 to 2006, Strong Harvest cofounders Rick and Jeri lived in Tanzania, dedicating their lives to humanitarian work. During that time, Jeri directed and significantly grew the Children of Promise child sponsorship program (www.childrenofpromise.global) – a vital initiative that supports hundreds of students by providing school fees and uniforms, supplies, medical care, and nutritional support. Meanwhile, Rick focused on community development, including pioneering a moringa project that showcased sustainable agricultural practices to improve lives.

Their commitment laid the groundwork for lasting change, nurturing deep bonds with local families and community leaders.

Connecting Through Compassion

During one of their early trips back to the United States from Tanzania, Rick and Jeri connected with an exceptionally generous friend whose support became a cornerstone for many lives. This friend, who has chosen to remain anonymous, provided sponsorship to a Maasai student named Soma from his early school years all the way through university, ensuring that financial barriers never hindered his pursuit of education. This friend’s unwavering commitment not only helped shape Soma’s future but also set the stage for his lifelong dedication to community service.

Soma’s Inspiring Journey

Soma’s growth—from a supported child in the Children of Promise program to a respected military leader commanding a regiment of 50 soldiers—stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and mentorship.

Originating from Gelai, where his parents still reside, Soma has not only excelled in his military career but has also dedicated himself to uplifting his community. His efforts include supporting local schools, establishing a much-needed medical clinic, and championing educational initiatives in both Gelai and Babati.

The Birth of Naretisho Primary School

Driven by a passion for education and community development, Soma and his wife Tedy—a devoted teacher—sought to create a beacon of hope for their community. In 2021, with guidance and support from Soma’s childhood sponsor and Strong Harvest, Naretisho Primary School was launched. Land was purchased, moringa trees planted, and essential facilities built, including a classroom, an administrative office, and a bathroom. The plan was for the school to be not only an educational institution but also a hub for moringa training—providing daily nutritional benefits to students and practical skills to community members.

Building for a Brighter Future

Today, Naretisho Primary School stands as a growing institution with a completed first classroom and administrative building, a fully finished second classroom, and a third classroom nearing completion. As the school expands its reach by adding more grade levels and hiring additional teachers, further improvements are in the works—including a dining hall and a protective fence. The next project yet to be funded is a 6-stall toilet for the growing school.

Moringa training is woven into the curriculum, with students enjoying its benefits in their daily meals and community members participating in practical training sessions. Our Field Representative Raymond lives nearby and has already conducted several moringa trainings for the school community. The vision is to develop the school into a comprehensive moringa training center that uplifts the entire region.

A Continuing Commitment to Community Transformation

Strong Harvest is honored to be part of this long-standing journey of transformation—a journey that began with dedicated service in Tanzania and has grown into a partnership that changes lives. The enduring generosity of a remarkable friend, along with the collaborative efforts of local leaders and community partners, has made Naretisho Primary School a reality. As the school continues to grow, it stands as a beacon of hope and a model for community-led education and sustainable development.

We remain committed to nurturing these enduring partnerships and look forward to witnessing the continued impact of Naretisho Primary School in transforming the community through education, health, and empowerment.
